In 1 Samuel 13:16-22, the Bible records a situation in Israel in the time of King Saul.
At a time when war predominated the lifestyle of the day, the nation of Israel had no blacksmith to forge fighting implements. The situation was so bad that in verse 22, it is recorded for us: "So on the day of the battle not a soldier with Saul and Jonathan had a sword or spear in his hand, only Saul and his son Jonathan had them."
God's word clearly tells us that the Christian life is firstly, a battle we are to wage daily. Secondly, we are to prepare ourselves for the final battle with Satan. Also, currently, God is raising up a spiritual army which will fight satan on two levels - daily and in the end-time battle. We all want to win in these battles.
But to win, we must first have the sword of the spirit - God's word - living in us. Next, we must know how to handle the sword and how to wield it to great effect - that is, know how to correctly apply God's word in daily situations.
